The Client's Challenge
Our client, an international packaging company located in Birmingham, was grappling with an ongoing problem in their production area. They were seeking a robust, long-term solution for a floor that could handle daily wear and tear, reduce dust accumulation, and provide slip resistance for the safety of their staff. Moreover, they wanted a floor that would improve the aesthetics of their production area, especially when they had clients visiting their premises.
The production area, covering 820 square meters, had previously undergone several rounds of resurfacing. Unfortunately, due to inadequate preparation prior to these installations, the existing coatings had started delaminating, revealing a multitude of issues with the underlying concrete substrate.
The Assessment and Solution
The professionals at JD Flooring Ltd conducted a thorough assessment of the area. It was quickly evident that the best approach would be to strip away the existing, failing coatings and expose the underlying concrete substrate.
Upon inspection, the substrate was found to have several issues, including numerous bolt holes, damage from previous work, and poor joint edges. It was evident that the area needed intensive repairs before the installation of the new epoxy resin flooring.

The Preparation and Repair
JD Flooring’s team dedicated significant time and effort to repair the damaged area. The edges of the joints were repaired meticulously to achieve a flat finish that would provide an optimal base for the new flooring. After the repairs, the first layer of epoxy high build resin coating was installed.
In addition to this, over 300 bolt holes were identified and filled in the substrate. The team also managed to mend various other areas of damage, thereby ensuring the surface was perfectly prepared for the application of the next coat of epoxy resin.
The Initial and Final Installation
Once all the mechanical preparations were complete, and all necessary edge preparation and repairs had been carried out, it was time for the installation of the next epoxy layer. The team applied an initial coat of high build epoxy system, enhancing the floor’s durability and aesthetic appeal.
Following this, a final coat of the same high build epoxy system was added, this time inclusive of a light scatter of aggregate. This addition was strategic, as it provided slip resistance to the final coat, ensuring the safety of the workforce.
The client was elated with the final outcome – a durable, dust-resistant, and visually appealing flooring that also ensured slip resistance for their employees’ safety.
