JD Flooring Limited, a specialist in resin flooring installation since 1999, recently completed a significant project for a leading supermarket distribution centre in Cheshire. The project involved refurbishing a heavily used staircase connecting two areas of the factory. The existing flooring system, installed eight years prior, had provided good service but was now showing signs of delamination, colour defects, and wear on the stair nosing’s.
The scope of work included not only installing a new resin flooring system but also replacing the handrails. This comprehensive resin flooring installation project covered two landings, 26 treads and risers, plus coving. The challenge was to provide a durable, safe, and aesthetically pleasing solution that could withstand the high traffic and demanding conditions of a busy distribution centre.

Upon closer inspection, our team discovered that the existing flooring was a fibreglass system coated with an epoxy high build system. The fibreglass was delaminating in several areas, necessitating immediate attention. Our assessment led to a comprehensive recommendation for the resin flooring installation project.
We proposed repairing the failed areas, grinding the treads, risers, and landings to prepare them for a new coating system. Additionally, we identified the need for repairs to the stringers and coving. This thorough approach ensured that the new resin flooring installation would address all existing issues and provide a long-lasting solution for the client’s needs.
The resin flooring installation process began with meticulous preparation. We removed the existing non-slip nosing’s and used hand-held flatbed grinders to prepare the main surfaces. For areas with limited access, such as risers, stringers, and coving, we employed smaller grinders to ensure thorough preparation.
Repairs were carried out on the landings where previous balustrades had been removed. We also addressed issues with the coving, focusing particularly on corner areas. The existing fibreglass system on the floor was mechanically fixed back into place to provide a stable foundation for the new resin flooring installation. This comprehensive preparation phase was crucial in ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the new flooring system.

Following the preparation and repairs, our team proceeded with the resin flooring installation. We applied the first coat of epoxy high build resin to all surfaces, including landings, treads, risers, stringers, and coving. To enhance slip resistance and meet BS7976-2 health and safety standards, we fully blinded the landing and treads with a 0.4mm – 0.8mm quartz aggregate.
After allowing the first coat to cure overnight, we vacuumed off the excess quartz and applied a second coat to all areas. The stair nosing’s were cleaned, recoated, and fixed back into place once the second epoxy coat had cured.
This multi-layer resin flooring installation approach ensured maximum durability and safety, crucial for a high-traffic area in a distribution centre.

The client expressed great satisfaction with the outcome of our resin flooring installation project. They particularly appreciated our approach to installing the new flooring one side at a time in the stairwell and landing areas. This method ensured that an essential access walkway remained open throughout the project, allowing their operational activities to continue uninterrupted.
The management team commended the professionalism of our resin flooring installation experts and the precision and attention to detail achieved in the project. This positive feedback reinforces JD Flooring Limited’s commitment to delivering high-quality resin flooring solutions that meet and exceed client expectations, even in challenging commercial environments like distribution centres.
A solvent free epoxy coating applied in two or more coats, building a film thickness of up to 1,000 microns. It is specified for medium duty use where the requirement is a clean, hard wearing surface over sound concrete.
Aggregate is scattered between coats where a slip resistant finish is needed. Anticipated life is 5 to 7 years in light use and 2 to 4 years under moderate use.
