As the approved contractor for a pharmaceutical company in Liverpool, JD Flooring Limited was tasked with installing a suitable flooring solution for a newly refurbished office space being converted into a small test laboratory. The project, covering approximately 88m2, required a clean and durable surface to meet the specific needs of laboratory staff and processes.
The client’s requirements were clear and specific: the new flooring needed to be easy to clean, maintain a hygienic environment, and withstand potential spillages common in laboratory settings. These factors were crucial for ensuring the safety of staff, the integrity of test results, and compliance with industry regulations. Our team recognised that meeting these requirements would be essential for the successful transformation of the space into a functional and efficient laboratory environment.

Upon conducting a thorough survey of the site, our team of experienced professionals assessed the substrate for suitability. Based on our findings, we recommended a hardwearing epoxy high build coating system. This solution would not only provide the necessary durability but also contribute to maintaining a clean environment essential for laboratory operations.
To enhance safety in the workspace, we suggested incorporating an aggregate into the coating. This addition would improve slip resistance, a crucial factor in laboratory settings where spillages may occur.
The project had a compressed timeframe, with installation needing to be completed within a narrow window to minimise disruption to the client’s operations. Additionally, we had to work within the available hours that fit the client’s schedule, often during off-peak times. The client’s budget was another key consideration. Taking all these factors into account, we determined that the epoxy high build coating system offered the optimal balance of performance, quick installation, and cost-effectiveness. This solution allowed us to meet the client’s requirements while adhering to their time and budget constraints.
Our team began by meticulously preparing the surface using hand-held diamond tip grinders. This process effectively removed laitance and any contaminants from the existing surface. As the project involved a good substrate, no additional repairs were necessary, streamlining our preparation phase.
We then conducted a thorough clean-up to ensure a pristine environment for the installation. This involved using industrial-grade vacuum systems to remove all dust and debris created during the grinding process. We then followed up with a detailed sweep and wipe-down of the entire area, paying particular attention to corners and edges where dust might accumulate. This meticulous process is crucial for creating the best possible conditions for the installation, as it ensures optimal adhesion of the epoxy coating to the prepared surface and prevents any dust or particles from becoming trapped in the final finish.

Before commencing the installation, we took care to protect the newly painted skirting boards. Although ideally, we would have preferred to complete our work before the painting, we adapted to the situation and ensured all skirting boards were adequately protected.
The installation process began with the application of the first coat of our epoxy hardwearing high build system. After allowing this initial coat to cure overnight, our team conducted a thorough examination of the surface. This crucial step involved a close inspection for any imperfections, such as pinholes, thin spots, or areas of uneven coverage. Any identified issues were promptly addressed to ensure a flawless base for the second coat.
Satisfied with the quality of the first coat, we proceeded with the application of the second coat. During this phase, we incorporated the recommended aggregate and back-rolled it into place for even distribution. This step was particularly important for achieving the desired slip resistance. Once again, we allowed the coat to cure overnight, ensuring optimal adhesion and durability.
The result was a fresh, fit-for-purpose finish that met all the client’s requirements for their new laboratory space. The meticulous attention to detail throughout the installation process, particularly in the examination between coats, contributed significantly to the high-quality outcome of the project.

A few days after completing the installation, we conducted a post-installation visit to assess the results and gather feedback. The response from the client’s team was overwhelmingly positive. They particularly commended our:
