Project Overview

In the healthcare sector, maintaining a clean and hygienic environment is of utmost importance. This is especially critical in nursing homes, where vulnerable residents and dedicated staff depend on a safe and sanitary setting.

Our project was located at a nursing home in Stoke-on-Trent, with an approximate floor size of 60m². During the initial survey by JD Flooring, it became apparent that the existing vinyl flooring had begun to de-bond and perish.

This degradation not only posed a hygiene risk but also increased the potential for slips and falls, compromising the safety of both residents and staff.

The clients needed a robust flooring solution that could withstand the daily demands of a busy kitchen environment while ensuring easy maintenance and high levels of hygiene.

The challenge was twofold: first, to remove the deteriorated vinyl without causing significant disruption to the nursing home’s operations, and second, to install a new flooring system that would provide long-lasting durability and safety.

Given the importance of the kitchen in the nursing home, it was crucial to minimise downtime and ensure that the new flooring could be installed and cured within a strict timeframe. Additionally, the new flooring had to comply with healthcare standards, offering resistance to spills, stains, and frequent cleaning.

Assessment and Recommendation

With extensive experience in installing flooring solutions with strict health and safety requirements, JD Flooring determined that a Polyurethane screed system, installed at a 6mm thickness, was the optimal solution.

The initial task involved removing the old vinyl flooring, followed by heavy mechanical grinding to eliminate the latex screed bonding the vinyl to the substrate. Despite conducting preliminary cuts in the vinyl during the survey, the true condition of the substrate remained uncertain.

Preparation and Repair

The removal of the vinyl flooring presented a mix of challenges. Some sections came up easily, while others were firmly bonded to the substrate. In the latter cases, we employed a mechanical tile stripper, which effectively exposed the underlying latex and substrate.

Preparation is key to successful resin floor installation. We opted to remove the latex screed using hand grinders with PCD head attachments. This meticulous process was time-consuming but essential to achieve a suitable substrate for the primer and the polyurethane screed. By ensuring a clean and well-prepared surface, we could guarantee a strong bond between the new flooring and the concrete, thereby ensuring the longevity of the installation.

We recognise that every space is unique and so are its challenges. Our approach to repair centres on understanding these distinct needs. In the case of this distribution company, the persistent impact damage and regular forklift movement required a solution that not only refreshed the aesthetic appeal but ensured structural integrity. Our Heavy Duty Polyurethane Resin Screed Flooring was a fitting choice. The repair process commenced with strategic saw cuts to contain the damage and prevent further deterioration. Subsequent application of the screed ensured a levelled, fortified surface that stands prepared for the rigours of everyday operations.

Installation Details

Once the vinyl removal and mechanical preparation were completed, along with some minor repairs, it was time to install the primer coating and the Polyurethane screed system. Priming the concrete is crucial, especially when the condition of the concrete is uncertain. The primer not only prepares the surface but also facilitates better adhesion of the polyurethane screed.

After applying the primer, an aggregate was cast onto the surface to enhance the grip for the screed, which was then trowelled into place. The primer was left to cure overnight. Subsequently, the polyurethane screed system was installed manually and allowed to cure for two days before the kitchen was re-fitted. This curing period is vital to ensure the flooring achieves its full strength and durability.

Resin Flooring Type Used

Heavy Duty Polyurethane Resin Screed

A three part, heavily filled polyurethane screed laid at 6mm to 9mm and finished with a seal coat. It is specified for medium to heavy duty use where the floor faces chemical spillage and frequent cleaning.

Resistance in wet conditions depends on the seal coat selected. Anticipated life is 8 to 10 years under heavy duty use and 5 to 8 years under very heavy duty use. Static controlled versions are available.
