Industrial line marking applied in resin to a warehouse floor

Project Overview

As a trusted partner and the approved contractor for a large electrical and electronics manufacturer based in Stockport, JD Flooring recently completed a resin flooring demarcation project to improve safety and compliance within the client’s facility.

The client has a busy facility, working shifts, and any solution provided would need to be mindful to minimise operational downtime.

The project covered a total floor area of 85m², focusing on the walkways connecting the shop floor to the offices, recreational areas, and toilets. The primary objective was to create clearly defined, flat, and smooth walkways to ensure the safety of the workforce and visitors.

Assessment and Recommendation

The JD Flooring team conducted a thorough survey of the area, identifying a section of concrete in very poor condition. This section required stripping down and repair before the main preparation process could commence.

The remaining area designated for the resin flooring demarcation system needed mechanical preparation, followed by the installation of a suitable quick-drying system.

The recommended system consisted of two coats of fast-curing polyaspartic high-build coating, edged with 100mm yellow lines and walking men demarcation for enhanced visibility and safety.

Preparation and Repair

The project began with concrete repairs, addressing all loose, cracked, and vulnerable areas. These areas were removed down to a level that provided a stable base for the subsequent work.

A flatbed grinder connected to a high-powered dust extraction unit was used for the preparation process, ensuring a clean and even surface.

Once the preparation was complete, an acrylic primer was installed, creating a suitable surface for the application of a self-levelling repair compound to the damaged and stripped-down areas.

The JD Flooring team also identified and repaired additional small areas of damage to ensure a consistent and high-quality finish throughout the project area.

By dedicating time and effort to thorough cleaning and preparation, we ensure that the resin flooring system has the best possible chance of bonding correctly to the surface, resulting in a durable, long-lasting, and visually appealing finish that meets the client’s high standards and expectations.

Once the repairs and clean up were completed, the team meticulously taped all edges and demarcated the areas to be coated. This step is crucial for maintaining clean lines and preventing the resin from spreading beyond the intended application areas.

Installation Details

With all preparation and repair work completed, the JD Flooring team proceeded to install two coats of green polyaspartic fast-cure resin coating to the designated area.

The chosen polyaspartic system boasts a cure time of only 90 minutes for each coat, allowing for a fast and efficient installation process. This quick-drying characteristic minimised downtime for the client, ensuring that the walkways could be returned to service promptly.

The installation of the resin coating provided a durable, seamless, and easily maintainable surface, ideal for the high-traffic areas within the facility.

To properly finish the walkway and enhance safety, the JD Flooring team applied 100mm safety yellow lines to the edges and perimeter of the walkway using a thixotropic high-build epoxy line marking system.

The vibrant yellow colour provides a stark contrast against the green resin coating, ensuring high visibility for pedestrians. In addition to the perimeter lines, yellow walking men were installed at strategic intervals to clearly define the demarcation areas as walkways.

While staff familiar with the facility would recognise the designated walkways, the clear demarcation ensures that visitors, suppliers, and anyone unfamiliar with the layout can easily identify the safe walking areas, reducing the risk of accidents or confusion.

This resin flooring demarcation project completed by JD Flooring for the electrical and electronics manufacturer in Stockport not only enhances workplace safety but also aligns with the principles of 5S Certification.

5S is a systematic approach to workplace organisation, focusing on five key elements: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, and Sustain. By implementing a clear and durable flooring demarcation system, the manufacturer can support their efforts to secure or maintain 5S certification in the following ways:

Client Feedback and Satisfaction

Upon completion of the installation and thorough clean-up, the management team, accompanied by the health and safety compliance officer, conducted a final survey of the finished works.

The management team provided enthusiastic and complementary feedback, expressing their satisfaction with the overall quality of the project. They particularly appreciated the attention given to the repaired areas, which had previously caused health and safety concerns.

The health and safety compliance officer confirmed that the completed works not only met but exceeded the required regulatory requirements, signing off the project with full satisfaction.

The successful completion of this resin flooring demarcation project demonstrates JD Flooring’s commitment to delivering tailored solutions that enhance workplace safety and ensure compliance for industrial clients. As a trusted partner with extensive experience in the field, JD Flooring consistently provides expert assessment, repair, and installation services for resin flooring systems.

This project showcases the company’s ability to understand and address the unique challenges faced by electrical and electronics manufacturers, delivering results that prioritise the well-being of the workforce and visitors while minimising disruption to daily operations.

Resin Flooring Type Used

Resin High Build Coating

A solvent free epoxy coating applied in two or more coats, building a film thickness of up to 1,000 microns. It is specified for medium duty use where the requirement is a clean, hard wearing surface over sound concrete.

Aggregate is scattered between coats where a slip resistant finish is needed. Anticipated life is 5 to 7 years in light use and 2 to 4 years under moderate use.
