As the approved contractor for a school district in Cheshire, JD Flooring Limited was tasked with addressing the deteriorating floor in the main hall of a Primary School.
Built in the 1950s, the school faced ongoing maintenance challenges, particularly with its ageing magnesite flooring.
The surface had begun to break down significantly, causing issues with dust from the degrading sawdust-based system.
With an approximate floor size of 185m2, our team was called upon to provide a modern, durable solution that would meet the diverse needs of this multi-purpose space.
Assessment and Recommendation
Our initial assessment involved conducting thorough tests to determine the best course of action. We carried out pilot holes to check the depth of the existing system and performed spot grinding to assess how the old flooring would respond to treatment. These tests yielded positive results, indicating that the surface was suitable for renovation.
Based on our findings, we recommended a flexible self-smoothing system. This solution was chosen for its ability to bridge any movement in the substrate and provide a soft underfoot feel, which was crucial given the hall’s dual function as both a dining area and a sports facility. The specified system comprised mechanical preparation, two scratch coats of primer, and a 3mm self-smoothing polyurethane flexible trowel-applied screed.

Preparation and Repair Details
The preparation phase was critical to ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the new flooring system. We began by diamond grinding the existing surface to create an ideal substrate for the new application. In areas where carpet had previously been installed, we adapted our grinders with PCD attachments to effectively remove the latex glue residue.
Following the grinding process, we thoroughly vacuumed the entire area to remove all dust and debris. We then applied two coats of primer using a squeegee method, back rolling each coat to ensure even coverage. These primer coats were allowed to cure overnight between applications.
Once the primers had fully cured, we addressed all cracks, holes, and imperfections in the surface using a flexible repair system. This step was crucial in creating a smooth, uniform base for the final flooring application.

Installation Process
With the preparation and repair work complete, we moved on to the installation of the main flooring system. The process began with the application of two coats of primer, each requiring overnight curing time. This thorough priming ensured optimal adhesion of the subsequent layers.
Following the priming stage, we installed the flexible polyurethane 3mm screed system. This was applied using a squeegee to achieve an even distribution across the entire floor area. To eliminate any trapped air and create a uniform finish, we used a spike roller immediately after application.
It’s worth noting that while the system appears high gloss during installation, it cures to a more matte finish. This transformation not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space but also contributes to its functionality, providing an ideal surface for the various activities that take place in the hall.
