Client Background and Initial Challenges
An international timber importer based in Grangemouth, Scotland, operates from a century-old building spanning 550m2. In the bustling world of manufacturing, every moment counts and for this client operational downtime translates to significant costs.
Whilst downtime is a critical operational consideration, the deteriorated concrete substrate had become a pressing concern from both an operational, and health and safety perspective.
The client had a realistic vision for the outcome, given budget constraints: sealing the flooring to reduce dust accumulation, improving both the aesthetic appeal of the space, and ensuring their health and safety requirements.
The Evaluation and Strategic Planning
Following an in-depth assessment of the site and thorough discussions with the client regarding their specific needs, our team pinpointed two primary challenges: the limited budget allocation and the notably deteriorated state of the substrate.
Significant preparation and repairs were essential, along with installing a flooring system that wouldn’t just serve as a temporary fix, but one that would genuinely revitalise and enhance the longevity of the area.
The presence and layout of various machinery in the workspace added another layer of complexity to the task, meaning our planning was not just about the floor’s treatment, but also about ensuring our team could access all areas safely.

The Preparation and Repair
The preparation phase was an intricate and time-consuming process that demanded precise attention to detail. Utilising handheld flatbed grinders and floor scrapers, our team worked to remove the multitude of inferior coatings that had accumulated over the years.
Given the placement of various machinery and equipment, accessing certain areas required additional manoeuvring and often, a change in tool or technique. These tight spaces also needed a lot of patience to ensure the task was completed without causing any further damage.
The Initial and Final Installation
The initial step in the installation process was the application of the epoxy high build resin coating. Squeegees were used for larger areas and were subsequently back rolled to ensure a uniform application. In more confined spaces, our team utilised rag rollers and paint brushes.
After this, a second coat was applied, which incorporated a light aggregate scatter in the high-traffic zones. This addition was crucial to enhance slip resistance and to align with health and safety standards.
