Client Background and Challenge
Our client, a renowned UK bodyshop group, engaged JD Flooring Ltd for the fourth time, demonstrating their trust in our expertise, professionalism, and results. This project posed a unique set of challenges due to the age of the workshop and the diversity of its existing floor finishes. The project involved the removal of an area of quarry tiles, screeding to level up the surfaces, and comprehensive mechanical grinding to prepare the entire area.
Covering a space of 570 square meters, the workshop’s flooring had not been resurfaced in several years and had almost worn away completely. The area encompassed a spray booth, seven car lifts, and an inspection area, all requiring extensive floor restoration and enhancement.
Proposed Solution
JD Flooring Ltd formulated a solution that would tackle the intricate requirements of this project. Following comprehensive preparation of the site, we identified numerous areas of impact damage, particularly in zones frequented by mechanics. To rectify these, repair mortars were used, and scratch coats were applied to ensure the substrate was as flat as possible, and any damage was duly repaired in readiness for the new coatings.
Understanding the workshop’s needs and the nature of its operations, we recognised that a thicker first coat than usual would be beneficial. This approach was designed to mask some of the outstanding imperfections within the substrate, to a reasonable extent.

Implementation and Repair
Using a squeegee method, the first, thicker-than-usual layer of high build epoxy resin scratch coating was applied, followed by a back roll technique over the total area.
This ensured an even distribution and penetration of the resin, providing a sturdy, levelled base for the subsequent layers.
Once this initial scratch coating was installed, we proceeded to fill some outstanding holes apparent in the surface, enhancing the overall structural integrity and aesthetic of the floor.
Final Installation and Finishing
Upon the completion of the primary repairs and first coat, a final layer of high build epoxy coating was applied. This was supplemented with a light scatter of aggregate. The addition of the aggregate served a dual purpose – enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the floor and providing the necessary slip resistance for the safety of the mechanics and other personnel.
