Client Background and Initial Challenges
Over the course of five years, JD Flooring Ltd has consistently provided exceptional flooring solutions to our client, a notable oil export company.
In our most recent project, we were tasked with the meticulous refurbishment of a large 1,100 square metre area. This space had been equipped with a 6mm polyurethane screed by our own team three years prior, which had now begun to exhibit considerable wear and tear.
An extensive industrial facelift was in order, to rejuvenate and revitalise the work area, providing a seamless working environment for the company’s daily operations.
The Evaluation and Strategic Planning
Our team embarked on a detailed assessment of the project, resulting in a strategic plan to utilise HTC grinding machines to recondition the area effectively.
Our initial analysis had led us to anticipate the necessity for thorough grinding and buffing of all areas twice. This was a vital step, to expose the split aggregate within the screed, thereby ensuring the creation of a strong bond for the impending new coating.
The evident signs of daily operational wear and tear underscored the importance of this comprehensive and intensive refurbishment approach.

Initial Implementation and Installation
To keep to our stringent project timeline of four days, we kicked off our operations by installing oil-contaminated epoxy primers overnight. This forward-thinking and proactive approach ensured we had a sound foundation and sufficient window to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe.
Post the extensive preparation and necessary repairs, it was time for the installation of the first layer of epoxy high build coating. A squeegee method was employed for this purpose, a technique that permits the application of a thicker layer of coating. Subsequently, back rolling of the coated areas was carried out, ensuring a uniform finish that was primed and ready for the next crucial phase – the final coat.
Final Coating and Enhancements
Upon sufficient curing of the first scratch coat, the final application of the epoxy high build coating took place. To enhance the slip resistance of the flooring, kiln-dried aggregate, with dimensions ranging from 0.3mm-0.6mm, was incorporated into the epoxy. This not only provided a robust and enduring finish, but it also significantly amplified the compliance with the rigorous day-to-day health and safety requirements that are critical in such industrial environments.
Once the final coat had been successfully applied and cured, the reinstatement of the 100mm yellow demarcation lines and walkways commenced. This crucial task extended to the manufacturing areas, storage spaces, and various walkways, all of which were refreshed in their distinct colours. This resulted in an impressively cohesive, clean, and crisp finish that revitalised the entire workspace.
