The Client's Challenge
This project involved a prominent Cheese Producing Company, based in Wales, who are widely recognised for their quality products in the Food Sector.
This client, was already familiar with JD Flooring having engaged our services at another site recently, and due to the success of that project, notified us that they faced a pressing issue with their existing resin floor, previously installed by a different provider.
The floor was 620m2 in size and showed signs of delamination and peeling, indicating poor preparation by the previous installers. This was particularly evident during the preparation phase which revealed the substrate beneath the resin coating showed no signs of proper surface treatment, previously.
Assessment and Recommendation
A thorough assessment and survey by JD Flooring revealed that the existing epoxy coating needed to be completely removed to expose the underlying substrate, which could then be properly treated prior to installing a new floor.
It was also noted that the flooring presented slip hazards, which needed to be addressed to meet health and safety standards.
With budget considerations in mind, the team proposed an epoxy high build system, enhanced with a suitable aggregate for added slip resistance, durability and the overall aesthetic appeal this type of resin flooring provides.

Preparation and Repair
Initially, JD Flooring considered a standard shot blasting method for preparation. However, it soon became apparent that the previous coating was so poorly adhered that only heavy-duty grinders could effectively remove it.
Once the unwanted coating was eliminated, and the substrate was exposed, the area was shot blasted and then heavy grinders were used to create an ideal surface for the new coating.
Minimal repairs and some filling were necessary, as part of the preparation process, given the substrate’s condition post-grinding.
Installation Process
Upon completion of the meticulous preparation, the stage was set for the installation process to begin. The installation process commenced with the application of the first coat of epoxy high build coating using a squeegee, followed by back rolling to ensure even coverage. This layer was left to cure overnight.
On the following day, the second coat was applied, this time incorporating a suitable aggregate to enhance slip resistance. The application was carefully back rolled again, ensuring a uniform and smooth finish, fit for the demands of a busy cheese production facility.
