Based in Birmingham, this UK distribution company is responsible for storing and distributing a diverse range of products, with a vast logistical network. They operate out of four large warehouses, each of which sees considerable daily activity. This includes substantial forklift truck movement and occasional impact damage. The main challenge was that the day-to-day operations were taking a toll on the integrity of the warehouse flooring.
The combination of heavy forklift truck traffic, coupled with the occasional but inevitable impact damage, meant that their floors had become a potential safety hazard and an operational bottleneck. It was essential that the flooring solution chosen could withstand the rigorous daily demands while ensuring safety and efficiency.
Assessment and Proposed Solution
JD Flooring Ltd offered a bespoke solution that took into consideration several determining factors, such as:

Following comprehensive survey of the site, we identified numerous areas of impact damage, particularly in zones frequented by mechanics and concluded that the best solution would be repairs, rather than a complete resurfacing project, using a resin flooring solution designed to withstand impact damage and heavy traffic.

Pre-Repair Preparation
Before embarking on the main repair process, it was pivotal to ensure the existing damage did not exacerbate over time. To achieve this, saw cuts were strategically applied to the edges of the affected areas. This decision would ensure that any present damage was contained and prevented from spreading any further.
To address the damaged areas, repair mortars were first applied, and then scratch coats were applied to ensure the substrate was as flat as possible, ensuring all damaged were professionally prepared for the new Heavy Duty Polyurethane Resin Screed flooring repairs.
Understanding the workshop’s needs and the nature of its operations, we recognised that a thicker first coat than usual would be beneficial. This approach was designed to mask some of the outstanding imperfections within the substrate, to a reasonable extent.

- Implementation of Polyurethane Screed: Once the primer had adequately set, it was time for the main act. A resilient polyurethane screed was meticulously laid out. This ensured the damaged areas were brought back to their original floor level, restoring the warehouse’s operational functionality.
