The Client's Challenge
With a longstanding reputation for offering the highest quality of service to their vast customer base, this prominent UK supermarket chain was determined to enhance a dedicated area.
Their aim was clear: to foster a safe, clean, and conducive workspace for the hardworking team. This space, of approximately 2100m2, was originally a storage facility, was envisioned to transition into an active packing and processing hub.
The challenge was to introduce a fresh, appealing floor finish that seamlessly aligned with the brand’s high standards. JD Flooring, with its proven track record, was called upon to meet and exceed these exacting specifications.
Assessment and Recommendation
Fortunately, the underlying floor or substrate was in remarkably good condition, making it a stong starting point. The area, having previously housed storage racks, revealed a notable presence of over 2000 bolt holes upon their removal.
These needed thorough attention to ensure a uniform surface. Following an in-depth evaluation, the decision was cemented to proceed with a 2 coat high build coating.
This meant the initial tasks revolved around preparing the substrate, which involved a meticulous process of grinding and filling the myriad bolt holes.

Further Preparation and Repair
The relatively good condition of the substrate led to the choice of shot blasting the entire space as the preferred preparation technique.
Utilising a specialised shot blasting machine, calibrated to a light to medium intensity, the area was methodically prepared.
Following the completion of this preparation phase, the team dedicated significant effort to address the bolt holes and other minor flaws, ensuring a surface devoid of imperfections and ready for the coating.
Installation Process
Upon completion of the meticulous preparation, the stage was set for the main event: applying the 2 coat high build epoxy coating. The first coat was systematically applied with the aid of a squeegee, followed by back-rolling to ensure an even, consistent finish.
A day later, the process was repeated for the second coat, but with a strategic addition: a fine aggregate was blended into the mix to bolster slip resistance. This enhancement was vital to guarantee the safety of all on-site personnel and machinery.
