The Client's Challenge
The NHS Project posed a unique challenge: tight timelines set by the main contractor coupled with a demanding workload due to a faulty screed overlaying the concrete substrate.
To add to the intricacies, our team was to operate amidst other contractors. This dynamic required not only skill but also impeccable coordination.
The discovery of the damaged screed meant that our initial workload, which was already demanding, had escalated. With a looming deadline and a site teeming with other contractors, the solution was clear. Operating throughout the night, across multiple days, would be the best approach to maintain efficiency while ensuring minimal disruptions.
Assessment and Recommendation
The removal of the existing screed and ensuring the integrity of the substrate through meticulous preparation became paramount.
Machinery and tool selection would play a pivotal role, especially under existing time pressures. After a thorough assessment, our team devised a strategy. Firstly, comprehensive substrate repairs would be carried out, followed by an essential double priming.
The flooring solution would be ta 3mm-4mm polyurethane flowable screed. This approach was tailored to meet the client’s exacting standards, ensuring a balance of functionality, visual appeal, and durability against daily wear and tear.

Preparation and Repair
Our task commenced with a deep dive into the problematic screed to revert to the original substrate. This phase saw the deployment of heavy-duty scabblers, kango hammers, and a precise double-headed grinder. Each tool was chosen for its specific role, ensuring a flawless preparation.
Once the underlying concrete was ready, the team seamlessly transitioned into the repair phase. This involved the usage of specialised repair mortars and scratch coats to address any inconsistencies or defects, reinforcing our commitment to quality and durability.
Installation Process
Following the extensive preparation phase, our attention shifted to priming.
Two meticulous coats of epoxy primer were applied to the substrate, a step ensuring complete sealing and eliminating potential pin holing in the concluding stages.
Following the a two-night curing interval, the Polyflow SL23 flowable screed was expertly laid over the 760m2 area.
The finishing touch involved strategically placing expansion joints to guarantee longevity by curbing any surface cracks.
